Today, we lost one of the most courageous and outspoken people this country has ever seen. Betty Ford, who was not only a first lady but a breast cancer survivor, who battled, addiction to both drugs and alcohol and in the 1970's. Ford, stood up for issues people, even her husband (President Gerald Ford) were opposed to and were afraid to speak of. She famously said "Having babies is a blessing, not a duty," referring to a woman's right to choose, an issue her husband famously opposed. Ford firmly believed that couples should live together before marriage, which was at that time was extremely controversial. She wanted women to be drafted into the military if men were.
This former first lady created the well known Betty Ford Center in 1982 and helped not only celebrities but over 90,000 people get a new lease on life. Today we lost a woman who understood women of all races and ages no matter what they've been through. R.I.P Former First Lady Elizabeth Ford, your courage and the path you paved will forever live on. Betty Ford died at the age of 93.
